Creative talk - "Perspectives for a Cultural and Creative Tourism in the Algarve"

Cultural and experience tourism, including creative tourism, have recently been subject of study in the Algarve. At a national level, "Turismo + Sustentável"  is underway, with a dedicated chapter for culture. And in the new financial programe “Portugal 20-30”, there is a strong focus on sustainability and on low density territories. How all of these aspects come together in a region that seeks to grow and enhance its heritage? Let's talk about it!

  • Aquiles Marreiros, 45 years old, born in Faro, graduated in Geography and Regional Planning (2000, FLUL), post-graduated in Municipal Administration and Regional Development (2001, FE-UALG), Master in Territorial Management and Urbanism (2011, IGOT-UL).

    He was a Geography teacher at the Pinheiro e Rosa Secondary School in Faro (2000-2002) and guest assistant at the School of Hotel Management and Tourism at UAlg (2017/2018).

    For 13 years (2003-2016) he worked in the Planning Division (preparation, amendment and review of territorial management instruments) and in the Tourism and Economic Development Division of the Municipality of Albufeira, where he was responsible for the Entrepreneurship Office and the Applications and Financing Office.

    In June 2016 he joined the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission, taking up the position of Director of Regional Development Services in March 2019, being responsible for the areas of planning, regional studies and cooperation.

    From February 2020 to March 2023 he was coordinator of the Monitoring Body for Regional Dynamics, responsible for monitoring the Regional Operational Program and the implementation of the Regional Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization (RIS3 Algarve).

    He was responsible for the technical coordination of the Algarve 2030 Regional Development Strategy and for coordinating the negotiation process with the European Commission of the Algarve 2030 Regional Program.

    Since March 2023 he is the Executive Member of the Steering Committee of the Algarve 2030 Regional Program.

  • Municipal Director of Administration, Planning and Administrative Modernization of the Municipality of Loulé (Dec 2017) and Technical Coordinator of the project of the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis Loulé-Silves-Albufeira by the Municipality of Loulé. Director of Cineteatro Louletano. President of the General Assembly of Acesso Cultura (since 2022). She was Commissioner/Programmer of the "365 Algarve" Program, being assistant to the Secretary of State for Culture (2016-2017). She was Director of the Human Development and Cohesion Department and Head of the Culture and Heritage Division of Loulé City Council between 2014 and July 2016. She has a degree in History (Archaeology) and a postgraduate degree in Roman Archaeology from the University of Coimbra. Master in History of Portuguese Art by the University of Algarve. Curricular part of the PhD in Museology 2007/2009 completed. She was Regional Director of Culture of the Algarve from 2009 to 2013. She was Director of the Municipal Museum of Faro (2002 to 2009), mentor and director of the magazine MUSEAL from 2006 to 2009. She was one of the ideologists and founders of the Algarve Museums Network (2007) and the AZUL Network, of the Algarve Theaters (2016). She was a Member of ICOM Portugal (2014-2017) and Vice-President of ICOM Portugal (2017-2020). She was President of the Board of Acesso Cultura (2016-2022). Guest Lecturer at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the University of Algarve.

    Degree in Sociology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Master's Degree in Social Psychology, ISCTE, Lisbon. Working at Turismo de Portugal since 1998, she has coordinated product development projects (cultural tourism, religious tourism, industrial tourism, nature tourism, gastronomy and wine tourism, medical tourism, accessible tourism) and also projects in the field of sustainable tourism; innovation and entrepreneurship; financing of projects of interest to tourism. Represents the Institute in various national and international forums.
